Patterned Polymeric Biomaterials

Research in the Lensen Lab is focused on three intertwined aspects; i) design and synthesis of novel, polymeric biomaterials, ii) surface and bulk patterning; iii) cell studies concerning adhesion, spreading, migration and growth.
As a specific example, in our current studies we are investigating nanocomposite materials consisting of PEG-hydrogels and gold nanoparticles. In the synthetic strategy, several crosslinking chemistries have been exploited, such as amine- or thiol- Michael-type addition reactions, and soft lithography techniques have been employed to transfer gold nanoparticles to the surface of PEG hydrogels. The resulting gels have proven useful for eventual biosensor applications (using SERS) and to control cell adhesion.
